2 TO THE EDITORS I have forgotten how valuable El Laberinto has been to my experience at The University of Iowa, it's a positive bridge for communicating ideas and keeping in touch. So thanks for taking the initiative for its revival. Sinceramente; Rusty HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT It has been said by many that to understand the current state of AFFAIRS and to plan for the future we must first have an understanding of our past. Thus, it has been proposed that we begin a serious effort to document the HISTORICAL EVOLUTION of the Chicano Indian-American Student Union and the Chicano Indian-American Cultural Center. it is Imperative that this effort begin immediately, as more and more students and staff leave the campus yearly taking with them a piece of our HISTORY we may never recover. With your help a six part series will be written for publication beginning FALL 1978. We will begin our story in 1970 which marks the official beginning of the CIASU as an organized body on campus. It is intended the series will reflect the social climate of each period and its IMPACT on our DEVELOPMENT. For the most part the series will be a reflection of events I personally recall and interpret them. By no means, will my comments/ perceptions be complete or even accurate. They are only meant to provide a base towards we can all add. I invite and encourage any type of assistance such as clippings, " EL LABERINTO ISSUES ", photos, personal thoughts etc. which you feel should be included. History majors may especially be interested in this task as some type of academic project. Please feel free to contact me: RUSTY BARCELO c/o EDDIE ILDEFONSO, 318G Calvin Hall, or call 353-7170. Sinceramente, RUSTY
