La Biblioteca [arrow going across] The Library The Chicano writer has had to struggle with a nebula of questions, muted dissent, aspirations and pride. Since the birth of the mestizo, the writer has perservered in his work despite unsympathetic Anglo publishers and has establised major publishing houses of his own. In so not much so much through defiance as embracing our culture and existence. No longer seen only on barrio walls, nor heard only within the closed nucleus of abuelitos and their listening grandchildren, we have now entered the university classroom, the bookstand, and recently the screenplay. The CIACC library's enterprise is to chronicle the Chicano movement with novel, anthologies, and periodicals and entries. With university funds the library brings information to the campus in hope of endgenering support for the Chicanos in the UFW struggle, in the striking factories, or in the battle against all forms of discrimination. The Center's library continues to expand its present collection. This will not only obtain the materials needed to supplement Chicano Studies, but will also expose the entire university to an encounter with Chicano literature. It is the library's purpose to supply students with a realistic impression of the diversity of Chicanos and to avoid the propagation of a single, static image which results from reliance on a few "representative" works. In essence, Chicano literature is a self-portrait of la raza establishing itself by unveiling archetypes within the literary world. It is a presence of true, composite portrait of man. 7
