[emblem] [Handwriting] Rusty, Looking good...please [[?]] my compliments to Hector! In the past, El Laberinto was published in a deluxe and grand manner once a semester. We still look forward to these special issues, but meanwhile we will try to keep you, Union members, alumni and amigos, informed of our activities and plans on a regular montly basis. Y [[?]] [[?]] meteros in mucho laberinto asi [[?]]. ***** ***** Los Bailadores Zapatistas practice on Thursdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 1:00 pm at the Recreation Room at Burge Hall. Adele Lozano and Elia Ildefonso are co-instructing the dance troupe. ***** ***** A group from the CIACC attended two meetings in Des Moines on Saturday, July 12. The [[Alianza?]] Latina [[?]], the very first Hispanic political organization, met at 9:00 in the morning. La Alianza had been somewhat inactive lately, however it has been active enough to place two statewide delegates through the Democratic Party: Rusty Barcelo of Iowa City and Lando VaLadez of Des Moines. They will be attending the national Democratic convention in New York in August. Rusty was also voted in the new chairperson of La Alianza. Steve[[?]] Rocca, law professor at Drake University, was voted Vice-chairperson. At 1:00, the Spanish Speaking Peoples [[Commission?]] convened for an interesting and enlightening meeting. Juan Cadcan, of the [[Muscatine?]] Migrant Committee, chaired the meeting which was attended by the SSPC's Director, Miguel Teran, and [[Commissioners?]] Alfredo Benavides, Virgina Correa-Jones, Ernesto Rodriguez and Sister Irene[?] Munoz. Once of the items introduced at this meeting was the fact that Dr. Flavio Vega has been hired by Dr. Lawrence Stolurow of the controversial Mid America Center for Bilingual Materials Development (MACBMD). Dr. Stolurow had informed us via letter that the MACBMD would be dropping its Spanish language component because they simply could not compete with other centers in the southwest. In the meeting of February 8 with President Boyd, one of the grievances presented was precisely the need to keep the Spanish language component at the MACBMD. ***** ***** The official report of the conference: "Hispanics: The Missing Link in the Public Policy" held in Des Moines in October, 1979 is just off the press. If you attended the conference and would like a copy of the report contact: Miguel Teran, Executive Director Spanish Speaking Peoples Commission Grimes State Building Des Moines, IA 50319
