PUEBLO ARCHITECTURE- Page 7 Themes The Indian people left a legacy to contemporary people in their architecture and their food The building techniques were innovates by the Indians and adapted by the Spanish; the methods are still in use. The chili plant was first cultivated by the Indian; now it is a favorite good of all cultures in the Southwest. Background Information In the Southwest, a typical style of architecture is adobe. The pueblos originated this style of building with sun dried bricks. They would further protect the bricks from erosion by encasing them with mud plaster. The homes were well insulated because of the thick walls. The "ristra" as shown here is a staple of Indian food. Red chili, the mature chili pod is dried in the sun and later strung to hang, This does protect it from dirt and insects. Chili is now a southwestern favorite food.
