This is the birth certificate of La Raza. Background Information. On October 19, 1514, the Spanish government recognized as legitimate the marriages between Spaniards and Indians. From the union of these peoples came a new race, La Raza--the Mestizo-- which predominates in Mexico, as well as in many other parts of Central and South America. Persons of Mexican decent living in New Mexico (and in other states) belong to the "new race". These people of La Raza are the actual builders of the Southwest.
