THE ROADRUNNER AND THE YUCCA- Page 4 Themes New Mexico has a unique and varied plant and animal life. Background Information In climates where it rains very little, or where it rains heavily for a short while, plants develop certain characteristics that allow them to withstand the droughts. These plants are called succulents. They have fleshy leaves or stems, which store water. Cacti, which belong to the order of succulents, also have spines. They are native only to the Americas and surrounding islands, though they have been introduced in other parts of the world. Here in New Mexico there are many varieties of cacti and other succulents. The roadrunner is an extremely fast ground bird of rather large size-- about 2 inches from bill to tail. Though it can fly. it generally does not, but runs very quickly. It feeds on lizards, snakes, and insects found in the area. It shares its habitat with the yucca. The road runner is the state bird; the yucca blossom, the state flower.
