SANTO- Page 17 Themes Farmwork is important "Santos" are an old art form brought to the Americas by the Spaniards, and developed by the Mexicans and Chicanos. Religion is an important aspect of Chicano life. Background Information. San Isidro is the patron saint of farmworkers. He is usually represented plowing a field with a pair of oxen. Sometimes there is an angel at his sidee. The legend is that San Isidro wanted so much to pray while he was working in the farmer's field that God sent an angel to do his work. He is always shown wearing the typical dress of the colonial New Mexican farmer; blue pants and shirt, red vest, and flat crowned hat. "Santos" are, generally statues carved from wood by specialists. It is a very old folk art which the New Mexican "santero" has continued to develop. Saints watch over people, according to Catholic tradition, and each group of people has its own special saint. San Isidro helps and protects farmworkers. They, in turn ask him to intercede for them to God for His blessing and assistance.
