FAMILIA - Page 2 Themes From two distinct cultures, the Spanish and the Indian, a third distinct culture, the Mestizo, or Chicano, was formed. In society of today, the Mestizo/Chicano family has a distinct place. The ancestors of the Mestizo/Chicano are intermingled with the history of New Mexico. Background Information The Mestizo/Chicano was formed by the unions of the Indian and the Spanish. When the Spanish arrived as conquistadores, they did not bring many Spanish women. As a result they married the Indians of the region and this marriage formed a "new race" with their offspring The Mestizo draws on the wisdom and the knowledge that he has inherited from both and combines into one of his own. The strongpoint of the Chicano culture is the strong family ties that they possess.
