White Sands and Los Alamos are synonymous with the atom bomb, as it was developed and perfected in both places. The first atomic bomb was exploded in White Sands in 1945. Today, while bombs and missiles are not tested in the atmosphere, White Sands and Los Alamos continue to be laboratories where weapons research and development is done. There has also been a shift in emphasis in Los Alamos to solar energy research in the last few years. See "Chicano Scientist" page 33 for further information.
