LA VIRGEN de GUADALUPE- Page 30 Themes Spanish and Mexican culture and religion have influenced the modern Chicano life. Religion is an important aspect of Chicano life. Background Information The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe involves a peasant Juan Diego, la Virgen, and a bishop. Juan Diego was walking in the mountains near Mexico one winter when la Virgen appeared to him. She told him that she wanted a church built at that site in her honor. He went to the bishop and told him what had happened. But the bishop refused to believe Juan Diego and did nothing. So Juan Diego returned to the place where la Virgen had appeared to him to tell her what the bishop had said. Mary reappeared and told Juan Diego to return to the bishop holding his cloak up to his chest. This would serve as proof of the truth of his story. Juan Diego did this. When he let down his cloak in front of the bishop, there was the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on it, and roses fell out. The bishop was convinced by the image and the roses and had a church built in la Virgen's honor where she had requested. This church still stands and has many visitors. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of Mexico, the UFW, and is much loved by Mexicans and Chicanos everywhere. She is honored throughout the Chicano community, particularly on December 12, which is the anniversary of the day she appeared to Juan Diego. On that day, there is a procession and a fiesta in Chicano communities, and everyone participates. There are mariachis, celebrations, and gayety. Peoples are chosen to enact the scene of Juan Diego and la Virgen Key Words religion-- la religion, patroness-- la patrona procession-- la procesion, to appear-- sparecer the Virgin Mary-- la Virgen Maria, to celebrate-- celebrar 74
