THE ALCHEMIST Page 39 The dangers of unwise persual into books such as these cannot be iterated too often not too strongly, and one who has read books of the first-mentioned category will agree with this. For, despite the fact that a perfect English translation of the "Necronomicon", for example, would mean, for the most part, nothing to the vast majority of those who read, there are certain sections, containing nameless, horrific data, the very presence of which in the mind of the reader, automatically opens the doors to otherworlds for him, regardless of whether he understands or not. It is as certain as stepping off the brink of a precipice: whether or not the victim knows the precipice is there, or is ignorant of the fundamentals of gravitation, the result is the same. The horrific dooms of Alhazred, Von Junzt, Pickman, Blake and the countless others have shown the truth all too graphically for those who have eyes to see. How then, one might ask, has the "Necronomicon" been translated, how did Alhazred, Von Junzt, Prinn and the Dirkas obtain their full knowledge, if this be true? I cannot answer that question in full: perhaps others, who may read this poor exposition, may be able to be of more assistance, but I can point of a few possibilities. There are ways of protection and safety for the student, ways which are so esoteric, complex, and specialized that even fragments as I know would mean nothing to those readers who desire the information. Only by years of study and training can one come to know. The amateur can only read such books which are not physically suicidal and through these discover what sections of the truly dread and abhorrent volumes can be persued with impunity. It would be something of a service to students, and a text for lovers of bizarre, if a carefully abridged edition of the "Necronomicon" could be made available. Even greatly abridged, containing only those passages as adepts know are safe in themselves, it would be a
