Page 56 ----- THE ALCHEMIST ----- THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES by Harry Warner, Jr. The spheres in their orbits so far overhead Make music sublime, an old bard once said. But oft as I watch them, serene in the sky Looking down on the earth from their places so high, I wonder if they see our world, now so fair; And think upon earth's sweet verdure so rare; And know that full soon, with all this bloodshed. 'Twill be finished, alas--yea, earth will be dead. And do they recall that once, long ago, Their worlds had foilage, and people...but no! All now is finished; they are worlds dead and cold-- And yet--still I wonder what their mem'ries hold. Do they too remember a moon, now long o'er; Remember a prophet--a Christ-Child--and more--- A mournful procession--a cross--and a hill?... The spheres in their orbits so high in the sky: Do they look upon us--watch o'er us and sigh?
