STEFNEWS 27 Oct 46 PSFS RM Twenty-seven persons attended the 29 Sep meeting of the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society. They were entertained by Dantini, a locally prominent magician and night-club entertainer, and Milt Rothman's talk on fantasy in music. At the meeting of 13 October, attended by fifteen persons, Bob Madle read "HG Wells--An Appreciation", a comprehensive article by Oswald Train on Wells and his science fiction tales. TRAVELS T On 13 Oct EE and Jonne Evans, Ackerman, and Tigrina visited Edgar Rice Burroughs at his home in Tarzana California. The seventy-one year old author spent three hours showing the group through his unusually furnished home, talking with them, and autographing books and magazines for Evans and Ackerman. James Hevelin visited with Henry Elsner and family, Kent Bone, Dave Miller, and Lynn Bridges in Detroit on 13 and 14 Oct. Monday evening Rusty took Henry, Kent, and Dave along as guests to a USO showing of "Topper", which Henry had never seen. Rusty then went on east to spend the last three days of the week with Chan Davis in Cambridge, Mass. Art Widner and Rusty got together Saturday night and discussed NFFF matters and possible actions therein during the coming year. Rusty's next fan stop was an overnight visit with Paul Spencer at Yale, after which he headed on to Philly and the conference which is meeting there today. FRANCIS FLAGG FJA Francis Flagg (Henry George Weiss), who had over twenty tales appearing in stf magazines since he first appeared in AMAZING back in 1927, died 17 May 1946. He had suffered from chronic tuberculosis and died of nephritis. He had appeared in AMAZING, the Clayton ASTOUNDING and STRANGE TALES, WONDER, and WEIRD TALES, besides having stories reprinted in Britain and the "Hall of Fame" reprinted in Britain and the "Hall of Fame" reprint section of STARTLING. STORY DIGEST for Sep has Saki's "Laura", Truman Capote's "Miriam", and "John Thomas' Cube" by John Leimert. All are of fantasy interest, the last an UNKNOWN type. MADEMOISELLE has turned to fantasy, too. The Oct. issue has Ray Bradbury's "Homecoming". An article on rocket-launching by Leslyn Heinlein has appeared in Gallet's French magazine, "V". LIFE, 14 Oct issue, contains a two-page article on a Denvention attendee who has started an atom bomb haven for a small religious cult which he leads.
