"Mike," I told myself, "has forever laid cold my powers for unthinking and unreason. What process of direct thought and clear reason would be mine if we associated any longer!" I shuddered at the terrible implication, and buried my aching brow under three or four soft pillows. Then, one day, I came upon a surprising revelation. I discovered that It was the law of gravitation that caused things to fall down instead of up. In particularly clear moment of unthinking which had become alarmingly infrequent of late, I phoned the man MIKE. I explained the object for my call and demanded to know how long ago this law had gone into effect, who was responsible for it, what had happened before it had been passed, and could we revoke it if we chose. Horrors! A muffled, but undeniable guffaw came over the wire. This creature, this monster to whom I had again turned, laughing at a perfectly reasonable question. Heartbroken, I replaced the receiver and wept. I came to with a guilty start as the door-bell rang. Mike stood at the door, two or three thin books in his arms. But then, whom else could I have expected but this ruinator of well-founded misbeliefs. He spread the books on a nearby coffee table, as I shudderingly noted their titles. "Science Fiction for the Beginner", "Unconventional Conventions" and a Treatise Logical Thought. I nearly swooned at the titles of clear sighted.....But alas! my new found clarity of vision came to the fore and prevented even that slight demonstration of release from the material. Yes, in this person's presence I could no longer allow pure laggedness of a jumbled haze to occupy my thoughts peacefully. My last beautiful mirror of unreasoning stupidity vanished, forcing me to face the stark reality of Science Fiction. I tried marrying the man to get rid of the horrible concepts, But by the Ray of Creation, I now belong to Science Fiction. Alas, all is illusion!!! PARA-REVIEWS by Bev. Brown Odd John by Olaf Stapledon...The biography of a supernormal person, "Odd John", who gathers from the world twenty-two individuals of his kind and how, together, they make a colony on a on a small South Sea island. The author, through John, illustrates how such a superior type of brain might regard our civilization, past, present and future, and the conclusions that are reached. A fascinating story that will hold you breathless for the very first word to the very last.
