"No!" he croaked. "Tell me about my Future first. Tell me it will also be sent to me!" And her turned from her, covering his face with his hands. "Yes, yes! The Past, Present and Future of a man always visit him the same night!" She cried sharply. "Never fear, it shall be as you wish. But hurry, look into my eyes! I command you..." And as he looked, horror spread over his face. "My God," he breathed as his eyes filled with loathing and fear. What he had seen was utterly repulsive and terrifying that Man may not look upon it without being shaken to the core. And again a voice screamed, "That is your soul!" With the cry ringing in his ears, the golden flame died away and the beautiful creature disappeared. Exultantly the shadows slithered forth as the embers burned even more dimly. And the man sat gazing into them, unable to forget the foulness of the thing he had witnessed. The time ticked by. In a few hours it would be dawn. A glowing read coal was all that remained of the embers, and the darkness was already chuckling over the prize it would soon seize.... The man stirred a little impatiently and wondered why the Future did not come. He waited, and the shadows crept closer...... And then realization swept upon him. His Future would never come for he had no future!!! Hysteria tore at his lips. Chokingly, he reached for the revolver and pulled the trigger--once, twice, three times. As he slid to the floor, the remain--coal went out as though a hand had been placed upon it, and the darkness sprang hungrily, triumphantly upon all. Bradbury "They don't even send him rejections slips any more. All his stories come back marked "Opened by Mistake."
