CONVENTIONS By Morojo These conventions are getting me down. Last year I went broke paying my way to the NYCON & the Worlds Fair. Then I spent the whole year thereafter saving up to go to the CHICON, denying myself shows & magazines & various other pleasures. I wonder if it is going to be worth it. Now I hear there is to be another convention in Philadelphia next year & one in Los Angeles, possibly, in 1942. Woe is me!!! I shall not be able to get to Philadelphia for which I am very sorry. The fun I had in New York and that which I anticipate for Chicago makes me want never to miss a sft convention. I'm sure I enjoy conventions as much as or more than anyone else who goes. The people are so very interesting to watch & hear. Last year they were all new to me but still extremely engrossing. This year my pleasure will noe no bounds. I shall be renewing old friendships and making new ones. I shall meet famous fans who were not present in New York in '39. I shall met E.E. Smith, himself, I hope. At least I shall hear him speak. Imagine actually seeing & hearing the author of the Skylark & Lensman stories! I shall see two of my favorite authors together; Bob Heinlein & E.E. Smith, if the Heinleins can stay over in Chicago. Perhaps I shall even hear them discuss politics, economics & religion. There is no end to the thrills in store for me as a conventioneer. I coud go on lyk this for pages! This year, in addition to all the other anticipated pleasures, we shall have Pogo & Trudy with us. These, together with Gerku, Perri & I, who were at the NYCON, will make five femme fans. Even Leslyn Heinlein may be on hand to augment the feminine ranks. However, there may be some dout cast upon Leslyn's claim to fanhood by the fact that she is an author's wife. No matter how ardent she should prove to be, there'd always be a shadow of a dout as with the wife of any other author. The only thing that goes to spoil this affair in the least for me is that Pogo will not travel with me to & from the convention. I have been dreaming ever since Pogo said she'd go about how much fun we three, Pogo, 4e & I, would have on the trip. But Miss Pogo has plans which take her a different route & at a different tym than I can go so I shall have to be content with her presence at the CHICON. Foo on her, anyway! I'll have 4e all the way & Paul Freehafer half the way going. That'll be bushels of fun. I noe-'cause I traveled with 4e last year. It'd be fun to go with 4e to Chicago even if there were no CHICON. I wonder how many other interesting persons whom I'm not expecting will be there. Enuf of that, Morojo. Quit mooning. U'll noe soon enuf now. Gosh! A week from tonyt (Tues., Aug. 20) we'll be on our way! Two weeks from tonyt we'll be closing the CHICON. I wonder if I'll meet another such interesting an individual as the CHICON as Dale Hart whom I met at the NYCON last year. I wonder if Milt Rothman will have any time for me. I wonder if I shall lyk El Perdue & he me. I wonder if Pogo will enjoy meeting all the fans. I wonder if Gerku & Perri will chum around with Pogo & me. I wonder....I wonder...
