STEFNEWS _____________________________ 18 Dec 46 _____________________________ BATTLE CREEK GATHERING During the visit of Al and Abby Lu Ashley to their former haunts in Battle Creek, they met with Ed and Lucille Counts, Ollie Saari, Helen and Earl Perry, Thelma and Ross Morgan, and Elsie Janda for a good time get-together. It was held 23 and 24 Nov at the Post Taverns Hotel. A large “Bridal Suite” was rented for a meeting place, and fan talk, plain talk, and poker and its derivatives all were thoroughly enjoyed. ____________________________ PROFESSIONAL PUBLISHING SATURDAY REVIEWS OF LITERATURE for 23 Nov has given Bob Tucker’s “The Chinese Doll” a very favorable review, as has the Nov issue of AMERICAN NEWS OF BOOKS. Bob’s book is receiving full-coverage advertising along with others of the newest Reinhart mysteries, being included in a full page ad in the NY TIMES BOOK SECTION. Canada now has editions of WONDER, STARTLING, PLANET, and WEIRD TALES appearing there. It contains a novelette by John Russel Fearn titled “Last Conflict,” 5 shorts and 3 articles. The shorts are “Supernova” by Cleator, “Worlds of If” (A Weinbaum reprint), “The Pain Machine” by Leslie Heald, “A Matter of Size” by Norman Lazenby, and “Technical Error ” by Arthur Clarke. It is sold at one showing, with no subscriptions being taken. It is available at 50¢ a copy from Forrest J Ackerman, 6151 Metro Station, LA 55, Calif. Another British first issue is also on the stands and available from Ackerman over here. Sold at two shillings, it has 48 pages of regular pulp size and contains three stories by unknowns who are probably pseudonyms and possibly American authors. The stories are “Fugitive on Venus,” “Mary Had a Little….?” and “Space Hobo’s Diary.” At 60¢ from him, Ackerman states “not worth it except to completists.” The holiday ESQUIRE has a stef story on Chan Davis’ pet study, topology. Compiler Edward Wagenknecht has reported that THE FIRESIDE BOOK OF GHOST STORIES is at the press. _____________________________ CHANGES OF ADDRESS Virginia Daugherty, 1067¼ West 39th Place, LA 14, California.
