PHANNY "The Phlimsy Phanzine" Perpetrated Occasionally for the FAPA by D.B. Thomson 705 Scott St. Alexandria, 3, La. ---:oOo:--- The most noticable thing about this issue of PHANNY is the lack of a cover of any kind. This lack is readily explained. First, nobody sent us a cover pic. Secondly, we didn't draw one. Ergo, no cover. Amazing, isn't it? ---oAoOoA--- We are very Chagrined about the large number of typographical errors and mistakes of other types in the Fall issue of PHANNY. Particularly bad were the cases where a word was completely omitted, although in no case, I think, was the sense changed seriously by the omission. Almost as bad was the substitution of "mimeo" for "hekto" in describing PEGASUS and FAN-DANGO. The winter ish wasn't so bad typographically. This (Spring) number, like the Winter issue, is being mimeoed by a local commercial firm, primarily because we delayed too long in cutting the stencils to permit sending them some fan with a mimeo and a kind heart. We hope to arrange to have this one printed on both side of the sheet, instead of one; but this will not be done unless a better grade of paper is available than last time. ---:oOo:--- We are not satified with the contents of this issue. The last mailing was really too large for 'zine by 'zine reviewing, and we had hope to arrange to handle the reviews otherwise, grouping comment s on certain major topics and making only brief statements with respect to the small sheets which did not come within the limits of these discussions. The late start prevented such handling however, since it would have necessitated a lot of preliminary research and dummying. The opening article of "Fandom as a Way of Life" is indicative of the intended plan. ---:oOo:--- The oft-repeated definition, "Time is that of which I haven't enough," seems to be growing more and more appropriate in my case. The latest minute decrement in my time, insofar as hobbying is concerned, is the change from half-hour to an hour for lunch period at Camp Livingston. That mans a half-hour less for writing letters, reading, and fan activities in general, each evening. I could make that up in part by using the extra half0hour at Camp for letters or reading; but the other members of the force prefer to play checkers, or discuss the new, or something of that sort, and perforce I join them. Who knows; I might even learn to play a fair game of checkers. But the point of all this is to explain just why I'm so far behind in my correspondence, So those of you to whom I owe letters, are not to asusme that I've forgotten you, or that I've given up letter writting; I've just been a little short on time. I'll get to you eventually. ---o+O+o--- Please note the change of address, as listed in the heading of this page. The change was occasioned by the war, like so many other changes (including my shift from Lincoln to the South). My ex-Landlady's son-in-law is going into the armed service, so his wife and children are returning to Alexandria, and will use the room which was formerly mine. ---:oOo:--- I just received a raise of approximately $20.00 a month, which I would like to put into war bonds. The trouble is, I get a net icrease of only about %5.00 per month. The raise shifted me into a higher tax-withholding bracket, making that deduction $8.00 per month more than before. (I may get some of tha back, eventually). My new rooms costs me $6.00 a month more, and retirement, fund $1.00.
