February, 1941. SUN SPOTS Page 25. [[underline]]SURE[[end underline]]---[[underline]]WE WERE SLOPPY[[end underline]] By Gerry de la Ree,Jr. "Most consistently sloppy fanmags: SUNSPOTS and NEW FANDOM." So states Mr. Joseph Q.Gilbert,(Q. Standing for Quack) in the latest issue of Art. Widner's fan mag., FANFARE. Now I'm not talking for NEW FANDOM, it's SUN SPOTS! (Notice Mr. Gilbert that SUN SPOTS is [[underline]]two[[end underline]] single words, not one!) While you say we are consistently sloppy, Mr. G., you must also admit that we are at least consistent in the publishing of our magazine. We have the honor ( and no matter what you say, darn it all, it is an honor) to say that in our first short year, we have never missed an issue, nor been behind in our schedule, which is a lot more than I can say for a lot of fanmags. By our sloppiness, what do you mean? Our poor spelling, our poor material, our uneven edges, rotten art work, or all of them. I guess it's all of 'em eh?---First our poor spelling. Sure Gaetz and I can't spell, and we have always been the first to admit it. So what are we suposed to do? Take a special course in school or something? In all, however, I believe our spelling, and punctuation too, has improved quite a bit. Many times while typing up these darn 40 stencils, I am looking up words in the dictionary, and all that takes time. On top of it all, i never took typing, and neither has Gaetz. So I'm doing this all with two fingers. Yep, our spellin's terrible!----- Poor material: They say, with a few exception that our stuff really stinks. Our fiction---pew; sure it stinks---who's suposed to write it? We've tried, and gotten called all the names in the book for trying. Should we try again? "No, no," shout the fans. However, while they're shouting, "Never again," are they offering us something better? Except for a few exceptions, no! Example; a letter from the estemed Bob Tucker, a fine guy, I'm sure, but look at what he writes: "Migawd , but SUN SPOTS stinks!" Now I ask you, is that constructive critizism? I'll say it is definetly not!" Our uneven righthand edges isn't really uncommon in fandom, so I won't go into detail on it. We'll have it sooner or later; after all, we're still young--Gaetz 17, Beling 17, de la Ree(that's me) and Plotkin 16. You must remember, SUN SPOTS came up the hard way. We didn't begin with a 50 dollar mimeograph machine, a lined up circulation, big fans for friends, skilled journalists, or any of the numerous things that many of todays fan mags are starting up with. No, we started with a [[underline]]one[[end underline]] paged [[underline]]typewritten[[end underline]] paper. The first two issues had the tremendous circulation(not paid, as it was free!) of twelve copies. Why was it only twelve? Because it took us some four hours or more just to type up those few copies. On the third issue we jumped to four pages, with the help of the school hectograph machine. Our paid circulation was just about nil. We traded with a few kind magazines, and gave the rest of our "sloppy" copies away free. With hardly any support we began the slow task of making our magazine bigger, and we thought better. The fourth issue brought six pages, and a few news subs; the fifth brought 10 pages, and more subs. As the sixth ish rolled around the task of
