February, 1941. SUN SPOTS Page 31. The Conference was called to order by A.M.Phillips, who also made a speech of welcome. Next came Milton Rothman, whose topic was "A History of the Future." Milty briefly outlined a plan whereby a group of fans with complete collections would attempt to classify all the prophecies of the future ever made in S-F magazines and publish them, then as the years go by we can see how correct they were. Elmer Perdue announced that work had already begun on such a project. Next came Sam Moskowitz, who spoke on what had been interesting us all, the present confusion over the proposed Newark Conference. It appeared to me that Sam did not have the conference behind him on this and altho several times an attempt was made to have the convention vote on whether it approved or disapproved of the Newarkon, Will Sykora by various parlimentary technicalities managed to get the whole business laid aside. The only point in his whole speech where Sam had the gathering with him was when he attacked fan feuds and asked all fans not to support them in the future. Art Widner also spoke on the Newarkon and during this whole exchange about the idea, some hot words had been exchanged. It seems that Jimmy Taurasi is behind the whole thing, but he wasn't there to speak for it. The Westood boys, who had originally boosted the Newarkon, announced that they had withdrawn their support from it because Tauriasi intends to bar Futurians from the gatherings, and it was in direct competition with the Denvention. In a sharp exchange of words between Unger, Sykora and de la Ree, several statements that Taurasi had made were called untrue and de la Ree practically called Taurasi a liar. Among the statements Gerry attacked was one that Taurasi had contacted every N.Y. pro editor and they had promised support to the Newarkon, but it was shown that Fredrik Phol had never been approached and also that, with the possible exception of Chas. Horning, no proeditor had promised support to the Newarkon! Cyril Kornbluth was scheduled to speak, also J.V.Taurasi, but as neither was present they naturally didn't speak. A telegram was read from the Chicago fans urging the Philly conference to back the Denvention.((Telegram signed by B. Tucker, was found to be a forgery--eds))Several attempts were made to bring the vote of supprot or non-support of the Newarkon off the table, and altho 19 out of the 32 eligible to vote were in favor of balloting, Sykora insisted that 20 votes were necessary to bring it off the table. Finally Ray Van Houten Got up with a speech and some resolutions concerning his "pro-science" movement. The whole business was boring and a waste of time, and while Van's resolution was passed after considerable changing, I doubt if anyone present but Van Houten was interested in it. Finally a motion was brought up to end the meeting, and this was passed. There had been an intermission earlier, at which time pop and hot dogs were sold. After adjournment quite a few stuck around for informal discussion.--Thus ended another S-f Event. This conference appears to have been below others in intrest, altho this is the first I've attended. Lets hope the next Conference is not all taken up by the boreing discussion of one topic, such as the Newarkon. [[underline]]THE END[[end underline]]
