October 5, 1940 SUN SPOTS Page 9. AND NOW----WHAT? By Gene Autry Seven men were gathered around the old mahogany table. Three were seated on each side, and at the head, an impressive looking individual stood. He was dark, black headed, with a small mustache. His mouth was rather large, seeming to give him the resemblance of a frog with its loud, blatant tones. A weak chin showed beneath the mouth, shoving a trace of cruelty out with it. To complete the picture, his attire was immaculate to the last detail. "Gentlemen", he boomed, "We are gathered here today to discuss the possibilities of snaring the United States in our net. It is my opinion that we can through science. I present to you Dr. Throckmorton, who will supply the details." "Thank you sire", Dr. Throckmorton rumbled, rising as he spoke. "As you well know the American loves his money. What, then, would be a better way to swing the U.S. over to us than through that medium? I have here in this phial a deadly virus, only recently discovered in my laboratory. It can live in two things, certain paper and the human body. Here, I have the only known thing that will kill it. Now my plan is this: supply trusted young men to take American money, filled with these deadly germs, to America, Then, when several hundred thousands of the Americans have died from this disease, our country will send word that we have the cure, thus making them join with us." For a few seconds the other six men were silent, as the enormenty of what the Doctor contemplated dawned on them. Then, with shouts of praise they lept up to shake his hand. That is, all but one. This one, born an American, had come to this country, giving up his citizenship in the U.S. to become a citizen of---well let us call this country Alvaria. The young man remained seated, reviewing back on the days when he had first come to Alvaria. It was then a small country, and not a dictatorship. Then the dictator rose to power, offering this very young man a place in his retinue, such as it was. He accepted, swearing allegiance to the country, Dictator, and everything else, save god, whom the Dictator had overlooked. But now, what must he do? Although an Alvarian by citizenship, he was still an American by birth. He reached his decision some time later. The planswent forward rapidly for the deadly virus to be put in the money. One night a rack of test tubes, containing the most deadly virus known to man, disappeared. A search was made for it extensively, but it was not to be found. The search was kept up, even a search of the dictator's chambers, for fear that the tubes had been hidden there. The young American, whom we saw before, removed all his money from the dictator's bank soon after this little incident. Then, he began distributing it among the servants of the other six men and the dictator. Quite suddenly, the servants began dying like like flies, followed soon after by their masters, throughing the country into Chaos. But, what of the American? He lay on his death bed, and he smiled to think that his dear country would be saved. He knew that Continued on Page 17
