November, 1940. SUN SPOTS Page 21 THE TRASH BASKET By N.E. Body FLASHES: News from our spies have it that the Novel section of TWS will be changed somewhat in the near future. First the novels will be of 30,000 word length, instead of the old 20.000 word length; 2nd, The minute type will be droped, and the regular size employed; Third and final, it will no longer be stuck in the back of the magazine, but will be moved up to the front, and thus be the first story in the issue, similar to Startling... Congratulations to the John V. Campbell, Jr's who were blessed with a baby daughter just recently. The father is the editor of science fictions top magazine, Astounding.... Big news will break at Fictioneers within a month, says Frederik Pohl, editor of Super Science & Astonishing Stories.... Chicon reported as big success....Next years convention to be held in Denver, and will be called the Denverention....East coast fans may also get convention. It will be held in Newark, probably at a time different than the Denverention, so as fans can attend both.....Finis.............. The last issue of Sun Spots, with its extra large format, and variety of authors, brought us many fine compliments. Most all opinions expressed by our readers was favorable. It seems that the picture of the three editors was the best liked feature of the issue, and some time in the future perhaps we might get a picture of a few of the Solaroid Club and give you their autobiographys? How about it?... D.B Thompson's contest winning story was well received and took top honors in the fiction field. Jerry Keeley's "Dreams" was well liked by sevrl readers, and disliked by others. But thoes who enjoyed it, outnumbered thoes that didn't. and thus it took second place..."And Now--What?" by Frank Autry was likened, by several readers, to the "Whistling Death", astoryappearing in an old Amazing... After the first person called it to my attention, I wrote and asked Frank if he knew about the Amazing yarn. He said that his story was written before "The Whistling Death" ever appeared!... Most all the readers took a poke at Beling's story. I wish to make an explanation about that. You see, the story came in at the last moment, when there was but one page remaining to fill. As the story was typed, it took too much room. For that reason, Mr. Beling's ending was replaced by a shorter one done on the spur of the moment by one of the editors.. Sam Moskowitz's article, came in for much critism, and was greatly enjoyed by all, even thow some disagreed with his opinion....J.J. Fortier's "Visit to Shangri-LA" was also liked, as was the remander of the departments .... The "Spy" column, incidently scopped Fantasy News, on all news printed! Because of lack of news this time, all the scoops we had are at the top of this column.......Alll together, the readers subscription, and letters have made possible, this bigger, and we hope better issue of Sun Spots ... The more subs we get the bigger Sun Spots will become... I was going to review several books that I have read, but it seems I have used up more space on things than I had planed for. The books were: "The Wonder Stick," and "The Oracles of Nostradamus" Besides these I read five of the "Mars" books in the past few weeks. Perhaps I'll review them next month. But till then, I remain: yours truly--- N.E. Body........
