April, 1941. SUN SPOTS Page 3. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * why make an issue of it? By 'The Editors' Here it is, a week or so late, but we finally got out. We had to wait some time for our stencils, and then we were a bit busy with other matters too. But # 17's 24 pages will make up for the delay, we hope. The material this month is, we believe, pretty good. With articles by Tremaine, Gnaedinger, Martin, etc. We think it should be as good, if not better than past issues. Perhaps you are wondering where the last part of "Bucaneers" is, Plotkin inparticular. Well, readers, we have had to remove it till next issue. We hope this system of doing serials isn't stretching your good will too far, but we thought that one piece of fiction in this issue was plenty, and that would be "Weapon Needed", as it has already been set aside one month. So it will be "Bucaneers From the Void" next month. "Davy Rockette" is definitely out, as the readers expressed their rank disapproval. This month we present our second annual short-short story contest. Last years flopped, but we hope that this one will fare better. The prize isn't much, but we can't afford more, so we hope you will consider it enough. We'll give the winner a $.50 subscription to any fan magazine in the country. To the second placer, will go a $.25 subscription to SUN SPOTS. Both of these shorts will be printed in SUN SPOTS, and neither can exceed 1,200 words in length. The shorter the better. Eight hundred words would be about minimum. Any other entries if they cannot be printed in SSp some future time, will be returned to the author, postage free. So come on amatuers, get those short-shorts in. Anything that happens around Saturn will do, and artist de la Ree has supplied you a hero. (that sickly looking guy in the left hand corner)! Get going. Deadline April 20. This issue is dedicated to the late Earl Singleton. Next month, we will have any of the material that is listed at the bottom of page 5, that we have room to publish. Oh, yes, remember to keep those letters comming. All the ones possible are printed. We're glad to see that Bob Tucker has reversed his views on SSp and that Art Widner is weaking slightly--ever so slightly. (wow, is that guy hard to please.) He wishes us to dummy SSp, as it is we are having our troubles getting it out. We keep telling you, we are slow typists, and it would take us twice as much time to dummy it all up, and even more if we attempted even edges! If one of us takes typing in school; maybe then, but till that time - -? As this is typed, none of the pages except the front cover have been mimeod, and thus we can't comment on the mimeoing this issue. All that we can do is hope it turns out as well as last months. Thanks go out to all those who have contributed letters, articles, fiction, reviews in their mags, exchanges, etc. Thanks to Don Wollheim and Fred Pohl for reviews in their pro mags, and to F.O. Tremaine for subscribing to our magazine, something which other editors have never done in our case before. SUN SPOTS will trade ads, as nobody seems to be wanting to pay for any, but if by chance some generous fan does acctually want to pay for an ad, remember the rates are on page 2. - - - Well, so long!
