SUN SPOTS Page 5 WHY SCIENCE FICTION? (Continued from page 4) Then ask any doctor how many human lives might be saved by a paltry five or ten thousand dollars invested in certain types of medical research. Ask an astronomer what mysteries of the Universe he might be able to unfold if he only had five or ten thousand dollars more for needed equipment. Five or ten thousand dollars against hundreds of billions. I can't imagine any earnest reader of science fiction robbing research to invest in destruction. We're all too keenly, breathlessly interested in research, in the growth and expansion of human knowledge and human boundaries. I think Science Fiction is creating a state of mind that can be the salvation of the world. I can't imagine any young fellow growing up with a dream of a scientific Utopia to become a war-monger. We've kicked hell out of Hitler's backside in Science Fiction from the very beginning. Sometimes he was a Martian, sometimes a Xmfambnnian, sometimes a thing out of the eighty-third dimension. But always, he was the guy who thought he could walk all over human values and human happiness to achieve a selfish goal. We like to see a rat like that get his just desserts in our Science Fiction and we're going to like to see him get it in real life. We know that human progress and better men are the values that count because those values are the basis of Science Fiction. And that is why I think there is, and always will be, Science Fiction, why I'll keep on reading it and liking. And keep on trying to write it. The End. DENVENTION BIG SUCCESS The 1941 Annual World's Science Fiction Convention which was held in Denver on the 4th, 5th and 6th of July is reported to have been one of the best yet held. Over 100 fans attended the convention, 68 of which signed the register, and 40 of which attended the Banquet held in the honor of Robert Heinlein, famous Stf author. The delegates, which came from 28 of the 48 states decided that the 1942 convention will be held in Los Angeles, Calif. The entire convention, and the proceedings thereof, were recorded on 65 discs by Walt Daughterty. The convention was given write ups in many of the Denver papers, and an article sent to NEWSWEEK just missed being published. The editors of that mag, however, promised to cover the 1942 convention. What Harrington Park fan mag was referred to as the "jitterburg of fandom", by what famous Westwood author? Frank "Gene" Autry, Texas stf fan is a cousin of the famous cowboy movie and radio star, Gene Autry! Larry Shaw, Schenectady fan paid ye eds a visit several weeks ago, and an enjoyable time was had by all. Did you know that Solaroid Club was started by the purchase of a telescope.
