PAGE FOUR FANTASY NEWS an hour to give fans a chance to indulge in refreshments, which were adequately supplied. It was during this intermission that some of the finest times were had by those present. There was really a chance to have a heart to heart talk with some scientifictionists, over the comforting top of a bottle of a pop and a sandwhich narrowly approaching the mouth. The first person called upon after the meeting was resumed was John W Campbell Jr, editor of ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION and UNKNOWN. He spoke authoritively on "THE CHANGING SCIENCE FICTION". The point he brought out insistantly was that science fiction has evolved as evidenced "Metropolis". He says that the type of stories that satisfied people years ago was no dice now. The novelty has warn off and given well to mundaneness. For instance one of the most successful stories, "Hawk Carse" was introduced with a little cruse description, but there had been such a previous lack of characterization in science-fiction that even that small but served to make the character unique and distinctly different. Campbell insisted that science-fiction must constantly advance, there must be no stagnation, in development of plot and story, and he sincerely believed that ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION was batting in the right direction by presenting "modern" science-fiction. His talk was well received and punctuated through-out with his characteristic dry-humor. Mort Weisinger received the next call, designated at "The Editor That Can Reject A Story More Jovially Than Any Other Edotir In The World". Mort wearing his habitual good-nature stepped up to the platform and began a talk which was made especially interesting by the fact that he consistantly referred to personalities and incidents of interest. Sam Moskowitz, immediatly followed Weisinger's talk, turned the chairmanship over to Will Sykora who continued as Master of Ceremonies. Will introduced, everyone of importance at the gathering. First of all, Charlie Hornig, who gave an interesting discussion on his development as a fan and finally to the position of editor of WONDER and SCIENCE FICTION, among the people caled for elulogies were: Ross Rocklynne, Ackerman, Binder, Darrow, Nelson S Bond, Jack Williamson, Rothman, Madle, Reinsberg, Baltadonis, Morojo, Kuslan & sister, and many, many others. It is to be noted the fine work the Women Auxiliary of the Queens SFL did at and before the Convention. They, Rose [Albertix?] Frances Alberti, Pearl Moskowitz, Frances Sykora and Millie Taurasi, made up all the sandwiches, sold the fan magazines, taking in around $18.00, taking down the name of all present as they entered the hall, Collected the fees for the dinner and numerous other tasks, plus their delightful company at the Convention. There is yet more to be written about the convention. Time being short and all records not yet straighten out, we could not present the complete 3 day convention report in this issue. ALL ABOUT THE AUCTION, BALL GAME, DINNER ETC will be discussed in the next and perhaps more issues of FANTASY NEWS. Some of the fan magazines plus the super program booklet were left over, these will be placed for sale thru the mails soon. Please don't write in requesting information on them. As soon as we get them sorted out we'll announce the complete details in FANTASY NEWS. MORE NEXT WEEK !
