taking the opposite side of the argument-- the futility of their desiring to be long-lived or immortal. But I did not dare to tell them all the arguments which I could so easily have mustered. I learned that lesson long ago. For I thus lost the greatest friendship I ever had when I tried to present those arguments to that magnificent man and truly great thinker-- Moses! **** THAT WESTERN TRIP. By the time you are reading this, I shall probably already be on my way on that long-looked-forward-to trip to the West Coast, and to the beginning of my new residence in sunny California, where it never storms, although sometimes you have to bail the liquid sunshine out of your cellar. My present plans call for my starting about the middle of July. As this is being written about the first of June, there Amy be all sorts of changes in my program-- the chief things being that no one can tell that far in advance what the transportation problem may be. But if they will let me, I hope to go to Chicago for an evening with Elsie Janda and some of my other fanfriends there (Fqwnkie Robinson just hoped that he is back in Chicago, so will probably see him. Hope to meet Ron Clyne then, too, for the first time. Then a day and evening with Th' Youn' Foo at Rockford, where she will be taking summer-school work; then to Minneapolis to see daughter Virginia and her Dave for a couple of days. Then to Fargo for a visit with Lorraine Dunkelberger, when I shall probably to be forced to at least look at Dunk (He'll probably be under foot most of the time. Thence across to the Frisco area, where I hope to see wee wullie, Graph Waldeyer, the Psmiths, Ebey, Lillian Schneider, and any other assorted fans who may be in the neighborhood. And so on down the coast to LA, where I shall see again those former friends I met at Chicon or Denvention-- Morojo and Pogo, the Ack, Daugherty, the Yerke, Bronson-- as well asmeeting all those new fans from that district whom I have never yet had the please of meeting. I expect to get into some grand arguments with Laney, whom I anticipate liking in spite of the fact that we seem to have so many different ideas about so many things; I was hoping for some poker games with Burbee, but understand he is going into Service, and may not be around. And all the many others, far too numerous to mention but whom I am anxious to make into firm friends. Yes, I am anticipating a great trip and lot of pleasure. I shall probably inflict the tale of the tour on you next mailing-- you poor, poor people! -6-
