MITY'S MAG Crl. MILTON A. ROTHMAN 13099451 c/o Postmaster, N.Y. THE FANTASY AMATEUR PRESS ASSOCIATION A TS PUBLICATION -o- FIFTH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE -o- One of the obvious things I could say upon this anniversary might go as follows: When I first started this mag back in March, 1940, little did I realize that upon its fifth anniversary I would be writing from an APO number and htat so many world-shattering events would have occurred in the meantime. Unquote. Unfortunately, my first few issues plainly show that I knew pretty damn well what was coming. I knew there was going to be a war, I predicted I'd be messed up in it, and I predicted some other things that I hope don't come true. So here I am, and I don't dare predict the next five years, for 1945 is already that future we used to talk about back in 1930, and 1950 is the utterly fantastic distant realms of time. The future comes upon us with a speed that makes my hair stand on end. (What little is left after my new GI haircut.) -o- MONKEY BUSINESS DEPT Back five years ago, we had a lot of trouble keeping the FAPA going in spite of official lassitude and the efforts of obstructionists. We're having the same troubles now, although I think that we are now over the main crisis, if Bill [Dawson?] properly carries out the duties of his appointment as Editor. I've tried to evaluate the Fern circular in light of conversations with Lowndes, Shaw, Michel, Wollheim, and Unger. It's a hard thing to do, since my time was limited, and I was paying a social call, not conducting an investigation. So these are impressions: The Futurians admit the mailing was late beyond reason, but act as tho no particular harm was done.
