STEFNEWS 11 Dec 46 BIG POND FUND A plan has been inaugurated by Forry Ackerman and Milton Rothman for the purpose of making the 5th World SF Convention in Philadelphia next year truly international. Called "The Big Pond Fund," it will depend on contributions from fantasy enthusiasts in this country to provide funds to bring some Britisher, probably Ted Carnell, to America for the Philcon. Forry reports that $7 has already been sent in, $5 coming from Earl Leeth, who has also recently contributed generously to the Fantasy Foundation and VoM. Further news of the fund will appear regularly in STEFNEWS. PSFS Thirty-three persons attended the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society meeting of 24 Nov to set a new attendance record for that club, breaking a record set at a meeting only two weeks earlier. Alexander M Phillips talked on "The Place of Anthropology in SF" as the feature of the evening. He discussed authoritatively some of the many mysteries of anthropology, and stressed the strong potentialities for science fiction plotting which might be derived from them but have been left almost untouched. His talk was received by those present as one of the most interesting ever given for the club. Officers of the Queens SFL and the Easter SF Association were present to propose a federation of eastern stef clubs as mentioned in STEFNEWS #69. The proposal was taken under advisement by the Philadelphia club. FOUNDATION Anthony Boucher has joined the supporters of the Fantasy Foundation with a $10 subscription. The Foundation receives $47.80 as its half of the profits from the Pacficon which were voted to it at the convention. NFFF Ballot counter Bob Tucker has reported that a few ballots have reached him in the delayed annual election of the National Fantasy Fan Federation, but that no trend has shown as yet. A constitutional proposal submitted to interested fans recently by James Hevelin is being acted upon by the Directorate after receiving necessary endorsements. If approved there, it will appear along with the Speer proposal and others on a ballot for a special constitutional election called by President Walter Dunkelberger for January. Pacificon profits have finally been divided as decided by a vote at the convention, $47.80 falling to the NFFF. PLANS Forry Ackerman is working on VoM number 50. A cover by Lou Goldstone will be angeled by Earl Leeth. Penguin Books is planning for a series of 25[cent] reprint editions of famous old fantasies such as "The Odyssey," which is supposed to be the first in the series. Dante, Sophocles, and other early fantasy writers will be featured in new translations.
