VOLUME I PLUTO JULY 1940 PUBLISHED BY THE LITERATURE, SCIENCE AND HOBBIES CLUB DECKER, INDIANA You fortunate ones who are reading these lines, in this the 3rd issue of PLUTO; are enjoying, we trust, the fruits of valiant endeavor; this noble collection of lyric and literature; this assemblage of beautiful artwork; this setting forth of the best wit and keenest insight from the brains of the elite of fandom; this super aglomeration of choice fantasy material; this example par excellence of the modern art of mimeography. (BRIGHT STUFF BY CHILDREN) Now that that's over we can get on into things important. By the way, what do you think these covers on this issue? We think that our Tom Wright drawing is just about the finest that has emerged from Tom's artistic touch. And the back cover if you will notice, designed by our staff artists, is another plug for the CHICON! In case you can't make it out, the cover is ment to depict many means of journeying to that great get - together. This time, we give you 5 color process printing by means of a mimeograph -- PLUTO is miles ahead. (NUTS!) If you will overlook the plutographical errors, we imagine that you will agree that the reproduction is just about the finest thing you ever saw -- with our learning how to space the columns and the lines for an evener edge, and all. (MORE EGO - EXCUSE IT PLEASE) We were fortunate to secure for this issue, that little masterpiece "Intrigue in Space", by Kenneth Mackley; thanks to Jim Tillman of Madison College, Tenn. (and Evansville, Ind.) for rescueing this classic from oblivion - from the assembled material of "Le WEREWOLF" a companion mag to be of Le ZOMBIE - which ceased to be. Thus is preserved for posterity this delightful, delectable, romance of Mr. Mackley's and the immortal Gumball Gunnysack. We also present a new fan writer. Bob Studley, who submitted his first article to PLUTO; "Little Letdowns". We predict that Bob will be a steady contributor to the fan mags, henceforth. Bob, you know, is the editor of the SCIENTIAL - abetter fan mag, which emerges from N.Y., City. Not only does Bob edit a mag and write fine articles but; he has submitted a swell front cover for PLUTO, and which drawing will appear on the cover of the next ish. We are glad to announce the beginning of a movement that we think will eventually lead to a revolutionary change in mid-west fandom -- the formation of the "INDIANA FANTASY ASSOCIATION".
