Sept. 27th. 1945 ... Meeting started at 8:36... Fhil Bronson paid the Club a visit bringing the roll call to 24... Other guests were Bob Hoffman (on furlough), the Ashleys and daughter Darlene, Walt Liebscher and Jack Wiedenbeck (all appearing for the first time at LASFS - just arrived from Battle Creek, Mich.), Rusty Barron (Riverside, Calif.), Charles Burbee (who arrived late) and ((it says here)) a newcomer to the Bixel Street haven, luscious Laurel Lee McDonald. ... Perdue reported on a meeting with a group of LA amateur journalists who were considering coming in with the LASFS and sharing the rent. The plan fell through... Daugherty suggested that LASFS members search for books, write reviews on them (those concerning atomic power) and send to local newspapers for possible publicity. LASFS was to be mentioned casually in each report. Other possible publicity throughs ties to motion picture releases, etc. were discussed... A heated discussion as to the change of name for the Fourth World Science Fiction Convention was held... No decision was reached... Evans suggested that the next meeting be held at Clifton's Cafeteria to celebrate the birthday of Al Ashley... Meeting adjourned at 9:50 for an hour and 15 minute lecture (2nd in series) on WITCHCRAFT by Russell. October 4th, 1945 Meeting started after the party at Clifton's (party held at 6:45)... Began at 9:20 with 19 present... Ken Bonnell came froward with a publicity idea in an attempt to outdo Daugherty's. He suggested that each male member selected a film lassie he would most enjoyed being marooned on the moon with. The idea was squelched when some farseeing member suggested that the originator might find himself in quite a predicament if such a thing were actually to happen. ... Meeting adjourned at 9:36 to hear a lecture (third and final) by Russell but it had to be postponed as Sam pleaded insufficient notes.. General discussions prevailed. Oct. 11th, 1945 meeting began at 8:20 with 19 fantasy enthusiasts present... Sgt. Oswald made a visit to Club (first in many years).. Betty Northrup and Jack Pasronscame up from Pasadena especially to hear Russell's lecture, but Russell didn't appear. Robert Bradford (off on pass from Boot Camp) showed up in his natty Marine uniform and announced that he was a father for the fourth time...... Daugherty reported on the Census... Mimeograph repair was discussed...... Daugherty asked to rent a mimeo at regular assigned times but was referred to the Rent-Payers Committee.. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 in favor of a Rent-Payers meeting... Several fans volunteered to devote an evening a week to the Clubroom. taking charge of the Clubroom on that evening. The results: Bonnell, Sun. Afternoon; Wiedenbeck, Sun.Eve.; Daugherty, Mon.Eve.; Ackerman, Tues.Eve.; Laney, Wed.Eve.; Al Ashley, Friday Eve.; Hewett, Sat. EVe..... Plans for reorganizing and refurbishing the club room was discussed and various committees appointed.... Evans held a "grab bag" at 50 per "grab".... Many fans were made happy.. Thursday, Oct. 18th, 1945 Amidst the atmosphere of a freshly0swept, orderly and (p)rearranged Club Room, the meeting got under way at 8:35 with 23 smiling faces ranged around the room. John Cunningam (late of Germany and Beaumont, Texas) and Tom and Eileen Daniel were guests... Andy Anderson presented a proposed document setting forth proceedures for use of LASFS equipment and a Constitution for the Shangeri L'Affaries.... Daugherty motioned that Club appoint Ashley, Evans, Liebscher and Wiedenbeck as a committee to investigate, correlate, present and past business of the LASFS including Rent Payers Rules, Constitution and Club Regulations for preposed improvements in management of Club affaires. The group agreed to act only as a fact finding committee. The discussion of Daugherty's resignation ensued... Daugherty (after being retained) asked for more volunteers on the Committee and many others offered aid...
