7 locking the wheel firmly in place. "Is that all?" Hagist's eyes were glowing, his body was tense. "No, not quite." The old man was appreciative of Hagist's interest. See this needle here in the center of the wheel? It's very delicately balanced. It's in the exact correlation with the nose of the ship. Wherever the needle -- there the ship will point." Hagist looked down. "But it's not pointing at earth. It's forty degrees off." "That's because we're still resting on the asteroid. Watch that needle, now." Adams gave a touch to the underhull repulsion button. The spacer rose slowly. At the same time, the needle swung slowly around until it pointed along the hair-line. it remained there unwaveringly. The old man touched off the rocket tubes and the spacer thundered forward. "See?" He was as proud as a child with a new toy. "We're pointed straight at Earth now, and there we'll remain." "The device is ingenious, "Hagist mettered hoarsely. You're sure there can be no hitch?" Adams laughed with delight. "Of course not. This control has been tested all the way from Earth to Pluto and back, under all conditions. I didn't know you were so interested in things mechanical, Hagist." "I'm not, Adams. Not at all. I'm interested in the platinum ore aboard this ship." Hagists's hands came from out of his shirt where it had rested gently. It held an electro-tube, pointed unwaveringly at the old man's chest. ADAMS' pale blue eyes went wide, with astonishment rather than fear. Then he smiled. "What is it, Hagist? A joke?" "You're the joke, Adams. And you're a fool. Thanks for the little lesson in robot-control, Professor. That lesson's going to cost you your life. You see -- I don't need you any more." Adams was no longer smiling. There was horror in his eyes, but not yet fear. He took a single, tense step forward. "You -- you---" "That's right. I'm going to kill you." "You -- killed Stuart!" The words echoed about the bare control room. "That's right toc. And now---" "Killed Stuart in cold blood," Adams intoned, as though
