21 CONQUEST Her feet seemed leaden as he struggled up the grassy hill after her. He knew with an awful desperation that he must never allow her to reach the top! If once she gained that lone, livid-leafed little bush that grew up there . . . ! He lifted his hands high, made a sign in her direction and mumbled a word according to the Ancient Book. Instantly she stumbled and fell. His dark face broke into a wolfish grin. Her spells were powerful, but [underlined] that was a word she had not known! He hurried now to close the gap between them. She stirred and rose quickly up, casting a baleful look back at him. Her face was lightly furred and aquiline, with evilly-arched brows over scarlet-flecked eyes. She pressed the tips of three fingers together and swept them in an arc before his path. Instantly the grass at his feet grew long and alive -- twisted purposefully around his ankles, impeding his progress. She chuckled evilly as she gained back the ground she had lost. [underlined] That was a trick she had saved for him! It had been taught to her by the Old One when she was but a child. She heard him cursing behind her, but now her eyes were on the summit of the hill where the single evilly-hued bush waved. She was sure she would reach it now! The sky beyond was brazen, with darkish clouds glowering down. She looked back to gloat . . . and that was fatal. She found herself gazing at the Sign they both knew, which he was making with a peculiar twist of his hands. It held her rooted there! Her feet refused to move! She struggled mentally to remember the combination of words that would break the spell. She recalled part but not all. She became almost frantic. He drew closer, leisurely now, climbing up to her, grim resolve and no mercy on his darkish face. Just in time she remembered the rest of the combination. Just to remember was enough. The spell was broken and again she leaped away, so taking him by surprise that he lost more precious ground. He hurried faster after her, realizing that the summit was very near. He could see that single bush with the sparkling leaves, waving against the windless sky as though beck-
