32 strange interludes us Louisa May Alcott (God forgive it) who is perhaps the supreme escape writer of our literature. But I am wandering somewhat. The point I am trying to make is that I believe Joe wrong in painting a rosy future for purely escape literature in this country or in the world. It will not die out; it never does. But we began to turn away from the escapist philosophy as a national philosophy, when the depression made us fight harder for thinner bread crusts. And I believe that we are moving farther away each day. When SLAN!DER was written, we were not officially at war and perhaps we had not fully realized just what a mess things were in. Now we know, and the response is inevitably, instinctively to fight back, as far as the majority goes. And that's no blurb for us; it's part of the makeup of the world. Corner a timid wild rabbit (hare) and stick your finger at him. If he's really cornered, he'll give you a good demonstration of what I mean. And just to remove any possible doubt, I did imply that escapism is softness and I meant it. My head is extended - chop it off . . . (See if you can get the two of us at one whack--yhos) DOTS I didn't care for. FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLL has certain slight innaccuracies in it. It was not "Annabel Lee" that I was reciting. I didn't, don't, and never will know but one line of it to recite; the first one. I was reciting from PARADISE LOST, starting with the beautiful line: "Better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven." Furthermore, Mrs. MacQueen ("who will hereinafter be referred to as Edith") did not sit in her favorite chair reading Love Stories, and if she had, there would have been no call to Connecticut. She came in just as Joe completed the call, and for politeness' sake, fainted with him. It so happens that Edith has a level head. She knew we were supposed to call Fischer and would never have let Joe get started on a call to Trudy just fifteen minutes before the time for the other call. And furthermore. . . Wull, wull - since I typed that "furthermore" two days have passed, and I have utterly forgotten what was furthermore. Next thing seems to be THUD & BLUNDER. Fortier - Conway; that rimes. THUD & BLUNDER - HELLFIRE that doesn't rime. My policy is "No use crying over spilt milk" and so I don't bother with wishing I hadn't met people whom I have met somewhat irrevocably. I have found it somewhat more amusing and much less depressing to make lists of people I'm damned glad I haven't met. Head of the class, Mr. Conway! We note he says: "...and I am snatching a little recuperation until the next drool comes along." I could say "Birds of a feather...." but he might reply"Opposites attract" so I will content myself with a saying oh so subtly that some people are conceited, stupid, asses period unquote. Since everybody knows that DETOURS is the best thing in the issue, it is not necessary for me to say so for which reason I won't. (Will contributors to S I please refrain from sentences like that directly preceding? It is a goddam nuisance, and I refuse to put up with it any longer -- yhos) To his quotes on the sparrow, I would like to add one thing. There is no bird harder to hit with a BB gun. Are you shocked, Yhos? (Nonplussed as to why you think I should be shocked. Incidentally, how about a crow?-- yhos) I wouldn't call the cover colors on UNK "repulsive" tho they didn't quite hit the old spot. I too, would like to know
