HORIZONS IN THE BEGINNING Well, we're in again, we hope. May 1 as we type this first master-sheet and the finished product has to be mailed before the end of this month to insure the reaching [[?]] in time, we'll do our best to make this the customary [[?]], but if it's two or four pages smaller than usual, you'll know there just wasn't time to do as usual and [[?]] get it included with the mailing. To come to the crux of the matter, we want you to elect us President of the F.A.P.A. Yep, really and truly. We're Vice-President now, you know, and haven't [[?]] the organization during the eleven months we've held that post. Our election to Presidency shouldn't have any catastrophic results. So--will you, huh, pretty please? ]It's customary for a candidate for office to have a platform. When we ran for Vice-President, we didn't [[?]], simply because we couldn't think of anything constructive. We were elected, too; that was because either of the lack of platform, or the fact that we were unopposed for the office. However, we happen to be in a very good humor at the moment, for a change, and so we're going to be generous and give ourselves a platform. Therefore, if you'll put the x before or after the name of Harry Warner in on the ballot--we can't be definite because we don't know how the ballot will be arranged--and enough of you do that to elect us, we promise to do our most during the forthcoming year to, first, stir up some more fans into joining and fill out the membership list and if possible create a mailing[?] list, and second, [[?]] organization[?] goes along smoothly the next twelve months as it has the last. (we don't claim credit for getting the mailings out on time during the past year; thank Messrs. Perdue and Rothman for that--but at least we didn't do anything to hinder the functioning of the club, which is far more than can be said about certain gentlemen in the past, whose names are best left unhektoed.) So, behold The Platform. We might also add that if you'll elect us, we'll do everything possible toward stirring up more activity among the members and the publication of more magazines to be mailed through FAPA. But then we'll do that whether we're elected or not, so it isn't a very good selling point. In other words, we wish to be President. We aren't even going to put out a special campaign sheet to be mailed out; we feel these issues of Horizons are proof of our interest in the FAPA, and you'll continue to find them in each mailing (to your regret, mayhap!) for a long while, the way we feel about the FAPA right now. We thank you for your indulgence while reading this (you [[underline]]have[[end underline]] read it, haven't you?) and hope you'll vote for Harry Warner for President. But above all, whether you vote for me, Lowndes[?], Stapledon[?] or Amazing Stories, BE SURE TO VOTE! Mebbe our opinions on the other candidates for election might influence you a wee mite, but they won't, simply because at time of typing we know not who's running, with few exceptions. We do favor Milt Rothman for Vice-President--after the real work he's done the past year, he deserves a relatively easy job! No notice of a candidate ont[?] for Official Editor. But Louis Russell Chauvenet mentioned some time ago he planned to run for that post. If he does, vote for him; we can think of few fans as capable for the job. We also favor the [[?]]-raising amendment to 75[[cent symbol]]; we'll be sure to vote this time, and hope all you other chums remember, too. Don't force the new Vice-President, whoever he turns out to be, to have to make a decision the way we did! If we haven't lost count, this is Vol. 2, no. 4, FAPA issue no. 3 of Herizons. We're positive it's the June, 1941 issue, and hope you receive it then. It's published for the members of the FAPA; a very few copies are left-over and sold for a dime each, but we're sold out of them for the next couple of issues in advance. No trades, none [[?]]. If you have some things to say about this issue, confide in Harry Warner, Jr. 303 Bryan Place, Hagerstown, Maryland, or send your comments to Joe Gilbert's Sound-Off, [[?]] in this mailing, [[?]] best of all, start up an FAPA magazine of your own[?] [[?]] the rest of us nuts[?]. You will eventually--why not now?
