CHATTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN We've dawdled long enough. The machinery for the convention is about to go into high gear. This will be the final issue of the Philcon News. From here on out we concentrate our energies on the convention itself. Because of the early date at which this is written, there is much that we cannot tell you because we do not know the facts ourselves. Watch the papers for further particulars. In Tympany we had a notice concerning a contest by means of which we were fishing for convention ideas. Not a reply has been received. Regarding the Big Pond Fund, the situation is this: Ted Carnell is still attempting to find means to attend the convention. The Big Pond Fund Raffle is still going to be held at the Philcon. Raffle tickets will be sold at the convention, and Forrest Ackerman will conduct the drawing. In the event that Carnell does not make it this year, the money will be held intact as the Big Pond Fund, and will be applied to the same purpose next year. We have just seen the printer about the convention booklet. We can say this as a result of the conference: The convention booklet will be photo-offset, and approximately the same size as the Pacificon booklet. We can't hope to make it better-looking than a Pacificon booklet because we don't have Lou Goldstone around here. However, I don't think we'll be ashamed of it, either. There are a few clever boys in this vicinity, also. Please send in your advertisements as soon as possible. We need time to lay out the pages, and the printers need time to run the thing off. August 1 will be the absolute deadline. You will notice that we have quoted $5.00 a page for advertisements, with fractions in proportion. Because of the price of things nowadays, we must make a small amendment. $5.00 will still get you a page saying something like "Greetings to the Philcon" with your name in big letters. For anything more elaborate, and for commercial advertisements, ask us for a price. As it is, the printer thought we were crazy asking only five bucks a page. We anticipate a slight howl at the prices which the hotel wants for rooms and for banquet. All we can say is that its the people you elected who shut off the OPA. Hotel rates jumped immediately after OPA went off. Secondly, rates are higher in the east than they are in the west, so that the rates at Philcon
