4 THE PRESIDENT'S COLUMN Men have been trying to unify the world ever since old Hammurabi churned the waters of Babylon ..... with distinctly unsatisfactory results. What makes us think we'll be able to succeed? Well, call it the everlasting optimism of the fantasy fan, or a common need, or perhaps even damn foolishness - but here we are, trying the unification process again. We think that a good step toward success is giving each member a chance to know what's going on - and we don't mean vague, tantalizing little scraps of miscellaneous information - we mean a steady, up to date, reliable channel which will let you share the fun and tribulations of club government. That's what this column is for: to act as a window in the opaque hide of administration Another step toward success is adequate representation of each national branch of SFI. We have divided the world into five arbitrary districts: (1) Afro-Europe (2) Australasia (3) Canada (4) Great Britain (5) United States and Possessions. Each of these districts is to be represented by a member on the Board of Directors. These directors will be elected locally, in order to assure the members of each bloc that their best interests are being attended to. The Board of Directors is headed by a Chairman, elected from the whole membership. In addition to a Director, each district will elect a local Secretary - Treasurer to handle local correspondence and finances, solicit contributions to the official organ, and discharge other small administrative duties. Will it work? What do you think? We will be glad to publish your serious opinions. JCM. ________________________ ________________________ LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The acting editor has received three letters of general interest since the last issue. Here they are without further ado. Charles R.G. Rowe writes in part:- I suggested ...... that it would be a good idea to have a column devoted to Esperanto or whatever international language is favoured by the group. Have questions and answers in regard to science and fantasy fiction written in an international language so as to stimulate an interest in and a desire to use it. (CRGR then writes later in the letter):- The reason that I mentioned Esperanto above was because it is a well known international language and several fans are quite familiar with it. -oOo- (Members interested in languages other than English should be encouraged by the society. However to consistently print articles in other languages in this Newsletter would probably be unpopular. One idea might be to have a complete non-English edition later on when we get organized. Ed.)
