May-June, 1941. SUN SPOTS Page 8. IS SINGLETON ALIVE? (Con't) NEPENTHE came out the day before he died. But here is the discrepancy -- some copies were mailed on the tenth, the day after he died. At least one copy was seen that was mailed on the eleventh! J. Chapman Miske, a correspondent of his, received a letter from Singleton mailed on the Tenth. MISKE FAILED TO ANSWER THIS LETTER. It was not until the twelfth that Swisher heard of the "suicide" and had his phone call from "O.K. Smith." Singleton had a sense of humor, an odd sense of humor. Some people his age don't know when things are a joke and when they are not. Bob Tucker died above five years ago. All the fan mags printed obituaries or started to. ASTOUNDING printed a letter on his death, and WONDER almost did. Bob Tucker didn't die, though. Some one though to send a telegram direct to him and he answered it. Nobody sent anything to Singleton. So all fandom has taken it for granted that the word of a totally unknown "O.K. Smith" is absolute truth and has taken it for granted that he said is so. Yet it is a fact that there is not one shred of evidence that Earl Singleton is not alive save for the unsupported word of this room-mate. If an unexpected face turns up at the Denvention, don't be surprised. THE END FANTASY SYNOPSIS By Raymond Washington, Jr. This fellow is a science-fiction fan - A sould unbounded to his native Earth, He pictures in his mind a ghostly band Of Phantoms sprawling on the glowing hearth. He lays the magazine aside; his eyes Are dreamy as the Phantom of the Flame. He ponders much - he knows he is not wise Yet he and other men are not the same ... He has a spark of fire within his breast, An atom of the great infinity And when he lays his body down to rest, His mind goes back beyond all history ... He knows that man is but a tiny mite A humble creature just begun to creep, And yet he has the wonderful foresight To peer into the future, and to tread When all the mighty stare are cold and dead, And man has found a deep and final sleep ....
