EREBUS 7 "This appears to be one of our standard contract forms, which contains no guarantee clause." "At the bottom," Peterson whispered, his temples throbbing painfully, "in blood." "Your signature? Oh, I see --m below that. 'Satisfaction guaranteed or your soul cheerfully refunded -- A. Harad'. Is that it?" The shadow laughed indulgently as Peterson nodded. "You always had a flare for this didn't you, Harad? I'm afraid," he continued bloodily, "That we cannot possibly honor this clause, Mr. Peterson. Apparently you have never had any experience with your earthly magazine salesmen working their way through college, which is unfortunate for you. You see, Harad is, of course, merely an agent of mine, not one of these upstart - ah - entrepreneurs, as it were. and since agents are not authorized to make changes of any sort in the contracts --- "I'm sorry, but --- Oh, I say, Mr. Peterson. Must we have such an outburst? If I were in your shoes I'd certainly conserve my breath now. You'll have ample opportunity -- and cause -- for screaming later. "Harad, dump him in the pits!" (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) THE FUTURE OF THE FANTASY PULPS (cont. from p. ) prices of certain "old time" mags. Thus, fandom's best interest eliminates the slick. while certain advantages, in the form of the :literary" authors writing pot boiler stfantasy, would accrue, it would in general be unsatisfactory. The same disadvantage, only more so, applies to the semi-slicks (like True Confessions), as their customers are mainly unoriented sexual oddities -- in the American term of the word, thus making stfantasy worse off than it is now. I believe an advantageous rise for stfantasy would be to the quality level. At the present time, they pay only a little more than the better pulps, cost twice as much, and are written mainly by university professors. If stfantasy could keep certain desirable traits of the pulps (cover painting, interior illustrations, etc.) and take certain desirable traits of the quality group, such as higher intelligibility, etc... Of course, this means that there would have to rise a fairly large group of intelligent followers of the fiction. Of course, quality and slick could exist side by side, as it does now, but I doubt if it will ever get that popular. Of course, there's the pulp, but what the hell do you think I wrote htis article for -- to backtrack? Thus, there probably will be a change in the pro structure after the war. A big change. The one thing I hope is that stfantasy will improve -- in my definition of the word "improve"...
