MAHOPE (which translates as [underlined] tomorrow[/underlined] or [underlined] manana [/underlined] ) ********************** Vol. 1 No. 1 MAHOPE is being foisted on readers of the Summer 1946 FAPA mailing by Mike Fern, now a resident of Guam, the Pearl of the Marianas. His mailing address for this one bundle only is: c/o FBIS, JGA, Guam Navy 926, c/o FPO, San Francisco, Calif. For the next mailing it will revert to Box 107, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii. (Box 107 is at least twice as large and four times more comfortable than a certain Box 260. The occupant, should he fall victim to claustrophobia, can hie himself to either Box 1746 or Box 231, either of which is larger by far.) ((And then Mike wonders why he has trouble getting mail!)) ************************** The editor of this feeble little oneshot wishes to acknowledge his vast debt to certain fangelenos, including one Francis Towner Laney and sundry individuals named Meyer, without whose toil, sweat, tears of rage (and blood-who knows?) this editor's ego would remain boostless until the autumnal equinox, a prospect he finds more disturbing by most. ************************* WELA KA HAO "Strike while the iron is hot"--- Hawaiian blacksmith's cry ---oo0oo--- When Spper and LASFS published the first [underlined] Fancyclopedia[/underlined], [m?]ost of its critical readers immediately pointed out pitfalls for future encyclopedists to steer clear of. Several of those who welcomed [underlined] Fancy's [/underlined] completion thought that fandom's changes and growth would require a new edition in from four to six years--between 1948 and 1950, that is. Two of those four years have passed; sufficient time, perhaps, to take stock and draft plans for "Fancy Junior". The 1950 edition should be expected to total 150 to 180 8 1/2 x 11 pages of double column elite copy, exclusive of index. Its goal should be the mature treatment of all material, literary as well as fannish, that the average neophyte would need to understand fandom's first quarter century. Although I'm fully aware of the messes fandom gets itself into when it indulges in organizational complexity, I firmly believe that [underlined] Fancy Jr. [/underlined] will need an editorial board with five or six sub-committees, and that it should be handled as are all good compendiums of knowledge: by assigning various phases of the work to people who are experts on the field or ^[[ ]fannish ^[]] period. one of the most prevalent reactions to the Speer [underlined] Fancyclopedia [/underlined] was that, despite the extensive travels of the preliminary manuscript, it was all to speerish. This is only one reason for having an editorial setup like a mundane compendium. Another is that there is no expert like an expert on his own ground: articles should be assigned to people who either know the facts from past experience or have the facts at hand in the shape of fanzines, prozines, or correspondence. -- 1 --
