H-1661 Summer, 1948 PAGE 3 [line across page] UNDER THE KNIFE FANTASY AMATEUR, Win 48-- Onward & upward with Laney and Dunkelberger! Laney seems to have gotten the best of Dunk again, though. Widner has something suggesting activity credit for officers. Just carrying out the dutuies of office would account for requirements. THE GE can't miss, Perdue has over a page here, Laney has four, and the Treasurer's Reports certainly will fill eight pages each years. How [underined] do [/underlined] we stand on our Constitution wher eis the authority for the deletion? I must disagree with Fran on Elmer's message. The decisions seem reasonably clear and are presumably binding as long as Perdue holds office and a majority of the membership is approving or passive. SYNAPSE, Win 48 -- Were the New Testaments eligible---or the creative film throwaway? I saw somewhere a statement by Maria Montez that "Atlantis" is her best role to date, that she feels that she finally got a chance to some acting in it. I oppose Wallace, too, Jack, but for different reasons. I fear that a weakening of the Democratic voting strength will allow the Republican party to nominate someone like Taft rather than a more capable and liberal candidate. A unified opposition would force Republican "wheels" to choose the strongest possible . As an independent who favored Roosevelt's policies a long time during my formative period and approved of HS Truman during his first year or two of struggle (while Laney and others panned almost everything he did), I now feel that their party is too weak to govern any longer. A return to reaction is undesirable, certainly, but the Republicans today seem to have more able men, and enough liberals, to make it my choice [underlined] if [/underlined] those men can be put in responsible places. I am with you against Wallace and will stick with you and Truman against Taft and his ilk, but I will continue to hope that the better Republicans will be taking over next year. HORIZONS, Win 43--Why do you turn out better reproduction for other mags than for your own? Always among the best in the mailing, you sometimes have to be good to merit struggling through the light & spotty print. Use sore ink or thin it down so it will work through the stencils more easily. Turpentine, judiciously used, will help a lot. The discussions on Smith and rap were the most interesting to me, and you make even music discussions enjoyable to a guy who never does any more than just listen. FAN-DANGO--The outstanding item is the parenthetical "including me" after "practically all fans are more or less off psychologically." Good for you! I didn't think you had it in your after seasoning some of your earlier statements of your own normality in the midst of a chaotic microcosmos. As for the quote on bomb-dodgers, it is not likely that the writer was a psychologist. Survival in
