PAGE 6 Summer, 1948 H-1661 Newcomers and on-shots: DAMBALLA, NEOPHYTE, and PRISM are what I think Stevenson, Milty, and Fran are asking for. The rest can use your efforts as examples. Few of us can afford to lithograph, but I like the way you other two made use of a regular duplicator. In addition to beautiful appearance you have all made good choices of material and handled it well. SOLIPSIST, YSATLAF, and STFAHATIC are examples of another extreme. Woops! Make that ESDACYOS for YSATNAF. I think I might have enjoyed that if I could have found readable parts. You, McInnis, show promise because you have taken some care in arrangement and were limited by your medium. Stein, you should do better; look what Boggs is doing and see if he won't give you some pointers. YSATNAF is neat, though not particularly interesting to me. VAMPIRE INDEX is worthwhile and well-done. In MERGER we get Widner's long mailing comments; these alone make it one of the most interesting in the mailing. I hope Art keeps that up even if he hasn't time to do more. Most of the rest were read and filed, though FANGMERA and TIME FOR UNION OF THE FREE were just filed. Postmailed: MASQUE is nice again. I hope this will kill the Ashley rash. SYNAPSE was missed in the regular mailing and is highly welcome, among the best even though not quite as peppy as you gave us a few months back. BURBLINGS is not up to par. I liked Condra best. A pretty good share fof the folks on Laney's listing are not members and seldom even visit the club; I would scarcely call them part of LASFS fandom. Granting that the LASFS is representative, though, can you or Fran give a proven percentage (invert that) of queers who appear in the listing? I am aware that there are some, but how many? TRITON misses the mark; your contents are okay, but not up to the attitude of the mag. THE INFIDEL SON was read without either disgust or elation. SPARX seems like quite a job for a FAPA pub, almost out of place here. SCROOGE, OBSERVATIONS, and LEGEND OF HOWOHPAPA were read and filed. ________ plan...college...small community..miles from any...target __________ Here is the follow-up on my plan to get "survival value" training. I have been accepted as a Freshman at Antioch College in Ohio. ___________ NY? New Orleans? Chi? It's the Cinvention in Cincinnati for '49 _________________ I have no report on the Torcon; others will handle that well enuf. However, I think it would be well for all of us who are interested in good conventions to start thinking about where the next convention after Cincinnati should go. There should never be a repetition of the "smoke-filled room" method which resulted in getting a fine group of fellows in Cincinnati to take on the job unexpectedly to avoid friction between intra-city groups when no other city in the Midwest was prepared for the job. I am happy that I will be near enough to offer my help for next year and hope I can be of some use to the Cicy gang for the big job ahead.
