**(7)** WAR DEPT AMERICAN FANS IN SERVICE One day some weeks ago we received a long, legal-looking letter from The Office of Censorship in Washington. "Oh-oh," we murmured, as we read the return address on the envelope, "some of our friends in the Gestapo have squealed -- Alcatraz, here we come!" It wasn't quite as bad as that however. It turned out that we were violating the wartime press code, that was all. A mere trifle. It seems we printed information on fans in service that told the enemy where the 416th Buttermilk Battalion was located, and such as that. It was quite all right to give APO addresses, but we made mistake of printing the fan's unit indentification. Too, soldiers are pointedly instructed not to correspond with strangers, and our list encouraged correspondance. It was a nice gesture-----yes, but they were very, very sorry . . . So, henceforth, no list of addresses where you could send letters and fanzines to the fans at war. Fanzine editors will have to find ways for themselves: we suggest you send the fanzine to the fan's home address, with a request to forward; or remember the chap's last army address and send it there---knowing that the army will forward it; or just wait until you hear from the fan himself, and send it to him direct. We'll help by the following: NOTE TO FANS IN SERVICE GETTING THIS ISSUE: send your address to those fanzine editors who have been sending copies of their magazines. We will henceforth print your name but not your address. - - - - - FANS IN SERVICE Forrest J Ackerman Martin E. Alger Rodman Allen Dean W. Boggs Daniel C. Burford Douglas E.
