WQuirrel Scene: Pong's Purple Palace Characters: Pong, Niel DeJack, Ed Connor (called Ecco), Frank Robinson, Al Ashley, Tommy Tomkins, Walt Liebscher, Abby Lu Ashley and Jane Tucker. -CURTAIN RISES- (Pong, Niel, Ecco, Frank, Jane, Tommy and Walt are seated around a big table littered with cards and chips. Pretzels and potables are much in evidence. A blue haze fogs the room.) Frank: Cahds, gentlemen? Ecco: (Conserves words by holding up two fingers.) Niel: Three pliz. (Comes a thunderous knocking at the portals. Pong looks up, in annoyance, then turns back to his cards.) Pong: I'm good! Walt: (Makes a noise like a rasberry going off.) (Knocking resumes at door with added vigor.) Pong: Oh, all right! (Rises and goes to door. opens small view-port.) Who is it? Voice from outside: It's Al. I'm a friend of a friend of Forry's. Pong: Don't know 'im. (Slams peek-a-boo door shut. It immediately swings back open, banging Pong's nose. The howls that follow are soon blended into a string of choice expletives that cause the paint on the door to blister.) Voice: Lemme in. (A hand reaches thru port, grasping a cluster of bills of large denomination, which it waves enticingly.) Pong: (Fumbles frantically at the lock) Come right in Al. Welcome! (Door swings open and Al steps in, blinking at the light.) Pong: So nice of you to come, Al. Meet the boys. (Mephistophelian leer spreads over his number two face.) (Al is seated at the table. Business of purchasing chips and pouring bubbling fluids. Game continues.) Tommy: (Wakes from brief doze. Squints one eye and peers thru pretzel at Ecco.) Your deal! Pong: (Ignores Tommy. Picks up cards and deals with dexterity of long practice.) Ecco: (Blinks. Takes off glasses, wipes them, and puts them on again. Openers have been dealt and cards are drawn.) Walt: (Shoves in stack of chips) Bet ten! Tommy: (Boredly) Up ten. Jane: What's trumps? Al: (With carefully assumed carelessness) Up ten. Frank: (Raises and lowers eyebrows rapidly) Upten. Jane: Well, what is trumps? Ecco: (Timidly) Up ten more. Niel: (Clears throat raucously) I'll up ten. Abby Lu: Who's dummy this hand? Pong: (smirks with secret satisfaction) Up ten. Tommy: (Bestows loving glance on growing pot in center of table. Twirls mustache gaily.) Up ten. Abby Lu: Why dosn't the dummy sit out? (overboard)
