14 PARADOX slithering Martian made. With amazing speed Ansel reached the one remaining weapon, a Darlson light-ray. Gripping it firmly in his hand, he crawled into the shadows and waited. After minutes that seemed like hours, the broken door swung open protestingly and a Martian stepped thro'. He peered cautiously into the corners with blue-green eyes, but did not see Ansel's huddled figure. He motioned with one of his six writhing tentacles and five others of his kind appeared beside him. They made no sounds, but by the expressions on their faces, Ansel knew that they were making use of their telepathic system of communication. And then what Ansel had feared happened. The chief Martian wriggled to the safe where the Codes Interplanetary of Earth were kept. An intense fear, commingled with a strange emotion that pulled at his heart, forced Ansel into action. His first two shots disposed of the Martian leader and one of his followers. Martians were ridiculously easy to kill without their customary armor. As two burning light rays danced past him, Ansel rid himself of two more opponents. But then a ray burned deep into his left shoulder. The smell of scorched flesh filled the room. Ansel smiled painfully at the last writhings, of the last Martian. Leaving a trail of blood behind him, he crawled across the room toward his water. But Ansel stopped beside the body of the Captain, shook convulsively and lay still. Four Interplanetary Points off of Saturn, a young mate spoke to his captain. "The outpost at Saturn hasn't answered in days, sir. What could have gone wrong?" "I don't know," the Captain answered, "but pray--pray that the Codes Interplanetary are safe. For with Earth and Mars at war, and the communications and orders that we've been sending out....." Ansel lay sprawled amidst his fellow soldiers, a smile in his half-closed eyes that stared at an unopened safe. _________ the end _________
