The human race has always found or constructed tools and weapons when tools and weapons were needed. Someday we shall get ourselves in trouble playing with atomics, or we shall reach the stars, possibly to meet with entities against which all our reasoning power will not avail. And it may be that, in the moment of supreme peril, a wise mother Nature will unlock the forces possibly now dormant within that portion of our brain, and place within hands ready for its use, a staff to aid us in the furtherance of our progress upward. And the reasoning faculty will be subordinate, as instinct is today, useful only in the transaction of ordinary business but not required in the solution of more complex problems. A higher, simpler faculty will do the heavy work. There should be no need for larger brains; for greater skulls. It could be, if the process of simplification were carried to its logical extreme, that our ultimate descendants will not be big heads -- but pinheads! #
