COOPERATION AT IT'S BEST [Underlined and Bolded] FROM "THRILLING WONDER STORIES" OCTOBER, 1941 "On the cover: The cover painting by RUDOLPH BELARSKI depicts a scene from MANLY WADE WELLMAN'S Novel, "ISLAND IN THE SKY". [Italicized] The cover painting depicts a scene from "ISLAND IN THE SKY"? Man, oh, man that's handling the truth with penurious frugality. The picture shows a man, with a girl [girl is underlined] in one arm and a gun [gun is underlined] in his hand, fighting two [two is underlined] gorillas. As written, the man fights and kills one [one is underlines] gorilla with a sword [sword is underlined] as the girl watches from the stand. Either Artist BELARSKI can't read or the Author WELLMAN can't see. It's one of the silliest bits of co-operation I have seen in months. And, another illustration of how seriously the Editor takes his job--or his readers. [A page break follows] FROM "AMAZING STORIES" VOLUME 15 NO. 8 "Front cover painting by J. ALLEN ST. JOHN. illustrating a scene from "YELLOW MEN OF MARS". [Italicized] A few slips by the great ST. JOHN. The text of the story reads; "---Gor-don and I whipped out our radium pistols----I drew my long sword----" ST. JOHN shows GOR-DON armed with a long sword, and CARTER firing a rifle-like weapon and equipped with a dagger (short sword). [A page break follows] FROM "AMAZING STORIES" VOLUME 15 NO.6 The cover purports to be a scene (by ST. JOHN) illustrating an episode in "BLACK PIRATES OF BARSOOM". Two men are shown fighting a thoat. No such fight appears in the story. FROM "SURVIVORS FROM 9000 B.C" IN "AMAZING STORIES" VOLUME NO. 7 "The sea beast was a ROBOT!----It is a-thing-not-alive but with ability to understand and obey orders----DOR DIAVO-----had constructed the ROBOT so it would obey him and no one else-----Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the launch carrying DOR DIAVO loom in sight". [Italicized] Another fine example of co-operation between author and illustrator. The cover illustration shows the ROBOT (?) with tenacles and a dome-like turret. But instead of being remote-controlled---the illustrator places a man in the turret operating a set of controls.
