Veteran's Wife Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever know This man whom War gave gun and bayonet, Taught him to use it and then let him go, First marking him with steel-lest he forget. He has seen things that he has tried to bury, But shadows in his eyes that never lift Tell me so plainly what his heart must carry- The ghastly memories-War's parting gift. I wonder when the night is still and deep If in his soul war's bloody banners fly. And when he starts and cries out in his sleep If he has heard a shell go whistling by. To us, whose husbands learned in bitter ways That war's romance ends with the gay parades, Torn bodies, shattered minds and sightless gaze, These things are real-the glory quickly fades. It is our task to keep our children's feet From bloody pathways that their fathers trod. Oh, let the fields for them be green and sweet, Where they can be at peace with man and God THELMA LATHAM
