[Letterhead] June 24, 1943 1530 Dear Mom, Just a short note to tell you that your only son is still alive and kickin'. (always doin' the latter.) I've had a nice time with the Craigs' as usual, and will be sorry to leave them this evening. They are regular folks, and it's almost like being home, to visit with them. Will really hate to go back to camp. The more I hear about Tennessee, the less I like it, and the less I'm going to like it. They tell me that the roads are just wide enough for one vehicle, and with a cliff on one side and a sheer drop on the other. They tell me it's hell to drive those roads, black-out. Woe is me! It's cloudy and rainy here today. And kinda' warm, too. One minute the sun is shining, and the next it's raining cats and dogs. One of those undetermined days. Hope it's sunshiny when I
