COUNCIL on HUMAN RELATIONS of GREATER ATLANTA April, 1964 5 Forsyth Street NW Atlanta, Georgia Telephone: 523-1581 NEWSLETTER EDITORIAL by Eliza Paschall "Uncertain" is still the best description of the state of desegregation in Atlanta's public accomodations, according to a survey of restaurants and lounges in Atlanta by the Council on Human Relations of Greater Atlanta made last week. Of the 76 establishments listed in the Atlanta Convention Bureau's "Visitor's Guide" to Restaurants and Night Life in Atlanta", 28 are integrated, 28 are definitely still segregated, 10 will serve Negroes under varying conditions, three said they had no policy and did not want to be listed as integregated or segregated, and efforts to reach seven were not successful. Among the "undecided", one restaurant replied that it will serve a Negro "sometimes if alone, usually if in integregated parties; no definite policy -- have refused and have served at different times." Another said it has served Negroes at one location and refused at another, and still another was described by the interviewer as "more cautious than against it." Of the 15 establishments listed in the classified section of the Telephone Directory as "American Express Card Restaurants", nine have a definite policy of segregation. A total of 30 eating places located in major downtown restaurants and hotels and chain operations, plus sixteen locations in retail stores in shopping centers throughout the area, and ten lounges and night clubs are desegregated. An up-to-date list of integrated facilities, including eating places, is available from the office of the Council.
