August 6th, 1964 Mr. John Rose First Congregational Church 313 North 3rd Street Burlington, Iowa Dear John: In behalf of the Mayor's Committee for Civic Unity I am sending you with this letter a copy of the Ordinance on Human Rights and Unlawful Employment Practices. Because the Ordinance will be presented to the City Council for hearings and a vote in September, the Mayor's Committee brings this to your attention now. Will you please refer it to an especially appointed committee for the purpose - or the proper existing committee if you have one - so the committee can digest this proposal and make a recommendation to the next meeting of your board or membership? To help your group discussion of the Ordinance prepared by Mr. Keith Schultz, a member of the Mayor's Committee. If you need further information regarding the Ordinance, I suggest you call Mr. Schultz at 4-7545 or Mr. Arthur D. Peterson at 4-8471. Mr. Peterson is chairman of the Mayor's Committee. This is a year that will go down in history as a landmark for human rights, and a step towards the American dream of equal opportunity for thousand of our citizens. We hope your organization will want to take part in this step forward for democracy by sending reoresentatives to the City Hall in support of this Ordinance when it is presented in September. A member of the Mayor's Committee will call you within the coming week and will be in touch with you again before the hearings. Sincerely yours, Mrs. James Schramm Member, Mayor's Committee for Civic Unity encs.-2
